Truemed exists to move American healthcare from managing disease to preventing it. The status quo today is to wait for people to get sick, and then treat the symptoms. We have a sick-care system, not a healthcare system. More than 75% of adults are overweight or obese¹. Half have prediabetes². Nearly 9 in 10 show signs of metabolic dysfunction³. These aren't edge cases. This is the baseline. And the spending reflects it: over 90% of American healthcare dollars are spent on managing chronic disease after it's already taken hold⁴. Less than 3% goes to prevention⁵.

But HSA and FSA accounts enable Americans to think differently about their healthcare. Instead of waiting to get sick, Americans with HSAs or FSAs can invest their money in research-backed interventions that prevent chronic conditions before they become catastrophic. At Truemed, we hold ourselves to rigorous clinical standards.

At the platform level, we vet every brand that we support. Our medical staff performs an independent clinical review to ensure the brand's products have a clear clinical application. That is, the products have an evidence-based connection to the treatment or prevention of a specific medical condition. Products that are purely cosmetic, purely recreational, or that otherwise lack a connection to the treatment or prevention of disease don't make it onto Truemed's platform.

At the individual level, an independent licensed healthcare provider reviews each patient's health assessment and makes a determination: would I recommend this product to this patient to treat or prevent their diagnosed medical condition? If so, the provider issues a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) that documents their clinical rationale. If not, the purchase is ineligible for purchase through Truemed.

This two-layer structure (vetting at the platform level, clinical judgment at the individual level) is how we draw the line: only products used for legitimate medical purposes are HSA/FSA eligible. Personal wellness products are not.

Congress defined “medical care” broadly, and did so deliberately. Under § 213(d) of the Internal Revenue Code, qualified medical expenses include amounts spent on the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease, or for affecting any structure or function of the body. Prevention sits right alongside treatment in the statute because Congress recognized that keeping people healthy deserves the same tax advantage as treating people who are sick. That was a policy judgment, and a sound one.
